String quartet, piano, reed organ, handbell and pre-recorded voices.

Duration: 15-18 minutes | Written: 2016 | Commissioned by The Wigmore Hall

Programme Note

The words are fifty place names, landmarks and topographical features (hills, rivers, woods, roads) found in a huge circle around Outer London, roughly following the path of the M25. The music changes incrementally, starting with a single note that augments into an oscillating gesture.

Like the landscape in a motorway journey, the road is always visible, the hum of the engine remains constant.

Appears on the album Slower / Talker, performed by Mira Benjamin & Gordon MacKay (violins), Bridget Carey (viola), Anton Lukoszevieze (cello), Kerry Yong (reed organ), Mark Knoop (piano) and Simon Limbrick (handbell).
